Obituary Dave Brown

Most of you will know by now the sad news that Dave died on 26th November 2016 after a short spell in hospital.
He had not been very well for the last few years and apart from using his bike for shopping had not been seen on it since 2012.

Dave and Arnold Russell were at school together (a long time ago now!) and both joined the Club on 14th March 1953
after a brief period in the Dorchester CC.

Dave soon developed into a very strong rider not just in time trials but also on the road and on the
Stapleford Tawny and the tricky Finsbury Park circuit. He was often seen at the front of the bunch taking
it up to catch the break. Unfortunately our records show only the seasons champions and not individual road event results.

On the time trial side we have much better records.
Dave won the fastest 25 mile time trial in 1981 and the fastest 50 in 1981, 1982 and again in 1983.
He won the season long Brinley Lewis Trophy in 1976, 1981, 1982 and 1983.

When he became a veteran he won the Veterans class in the same Brinley Lewis Trophy in 2005, 2006, 2007 and again in 2008.
He was awarded the Club Sportsman Trophy in 1976 and again in 1983. In 2003 he, along with his wife Hilary, were awarded
the same trophy for their work together supporting the Club.
Finally, he was awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Club in 2004.

But it was not just in the racing field that Dave was a staunch supporter of the Club. When he was not racing he would
often be seen on a road corner marshalling events and often with Hilary as well. He admitted to not being an organiser
but wanting to put something back into the Club, from which he had received so much enjoyment,
he volunteered to open the Clubroom and run the canteen on his own every Thursday evening, and this he did for several years.

We shall all miss our Dave very much,FR

2017 Tour de France.
Will this years' course suit our Chris Froome?

John Lee of the Icknield Road Club and a London & Home Counties Veteran member has at the age of 87 set a
National and Group Hour record when he covered the distance of 18.815 miles on the open air
Welwyn Garden City track in September 2016.
John a gentleman of the road gave up a chance of a fast time when he assisted me after my road accident back in 2001.
Also he was racing the year l was born

Long-time member Michael Howard will be riding part of the arduous ride from Cairo in the north of Africa to
Cape Town in the south later this month. On the 25th March he will be joining the ride at Mbeya in Tanzania
and then riding the 2,300 kms to Windhoek in Namibia. We wish him all the luck he needs. Later this year he
and his daughter Natalie are taking their bikes to San Francisco and riding to Los Angeles following the
Tour of California. More info on this ride to follow. Again, we wish them both well.

The Editor. Will be taking a trial ride on a Segway on Good Friday, a report in next issue.

Don't forget to use our website to catch up on any racing results and general information. We post our function photos for all to see (Christmas Luncheon and many more.

Well the first edition is usually the hardest to get written (very true). But once in my stride l am sure that the following editions will keep you amused and informed of the WhiteWebbs Cycling Clubs activities through the coming year.
Just a reminder to all our racing / non racing members the miles you have put in during the winter will not be as pleasant as the miles done in the warmth of summer.
